Thank you so much for reading this fic, too, despite your doubts about the pairing. I'm glad that this story leaves you with the feeling that here the relationship is what Luna wants, and I hope you won't feel too uncomfortable, extrapolating ways in which the young girl could have been coerced at some point.
I don't think I've ever seen this pairing except in my own fics. I was happily surprised that tjs_whatnot wished for it (among other Luna pairings and Remus pairings) while mentioning other features close to my favourite ways of telling stories.
Perhaps you can remember Challenges Like These, which you commented on in early 2010. Last spring I wrote If He’s Got Any Strengths, which is set at the beginning of Harry's third year and shows Remus and Luna's first meeting. This unusual, admittedly problematic pairing means a lot to me, and I haven't chosen lightly to write it and to go on writing it.
I'm glad you're really interested to know how [I] got into it. A short and not overly personal reply can be that another important theme for me is age difference (not child/adult relationships, no). Back in 2007 I had a need to write a pairing with an age difference of about twenty years and (preferably twenty-three years – and as I insist on keeping 1958 as my Remus's birth year, because I'd extrapolated it before the year was given in canon, I was happy to notice that) Luna's and Remus's ages were just right. Apart from the unfortunate fact that Luna was too young and Remus's student when they first met! That's why when I first wrote the drabble Fearing a Figure (A Later Sketch for Portrait, as I titled it back then), I hesitated for eight months before I decided I was sure it was part of my Remus's life (and that what had inspired it was part of my life, although the person who inspired it was 22, not twelve). And I also called the pairing "imaginary schoolboy Remus / Luna". I do believe my Remus has acted responsibly, too.
Thank you again, and I'm happy you've liked the vividness of the story in any case.
